WEEKEND AWAY: HERE A DUCK

Great gatsby party

There a duck. Everywhere a duck duck. That was my weekend away. Duck hunting. To be clear I neither eat duck nor do I shoot a gun. I just really love lodge life. Clear skies, apres shoot soak in a hot tub. Who needs a duck and a gun when you can play dress up? This is an annual tradition for a decade and this year's Saturday night theme was 1920s. Thank god The Great Gatsby was released this year because costume options abound!

We were with friends here in WA state over a river and through the woods with a ferry to facilitate. More exciting than it sounds. I promise. Time on the marsh allows for a little dress up as well. A little less sexy but one might be surprised what you can find at Cabela's. At the very least this palette will inform a future collection and I am definitely trying my hand at designing a better looking waxed cotton coat. Seriously.

All the shooting makes a great excuse for awesome vacations. At least it was before a dozen kids between us! I kicked off the baby trend and hid my first pregnancy on our expedition to Argentina seven years ago. A little time in Buenos Aries (steak without malbec is not the same!) before heading out to the Pampas for dove shooting.

Buenos Aries was so European in attitude and ease of exploring the city. Unlike large European cities, the art museums were filled with great masters but the buildings were in shocking disrepair. We stayed at the old guard's recommendation, Alvear Palace. I get it. Great service. But a lobby full of gift shops and tourist buses loaded with people coming to have tea made me insane! The saving grace was my insistence that we stay a couple of nights at Faena, which had recently opened. Developed by Argentine fashion designer Alan Faena, he enlisted Philippe Starck to execute his vision. Like steak with no malbec, this room without appropriate libations was not the same.

Pampas was the the most peace and quiet I have had in the last seven years. I was obsessed with true old world charm. Long dinners at long tables in rooms with spare decor and perfect color pairings. Dove prepared in the most creative ways but not creative enough to convert me although dove is surprisingly tender. I cannot wait to go back with two little boys and bring my fortunate experience south of the border full circle.
